It is no small feat to enter the annuls of international graphic design history based on only three known posters. But the artist, graphic artist, and designer Mary Vieira (1927–2001) did just that. Her poster for her country’s airline Panair do Brasil testifies to an extraordinary feeling for balancing visual dynamics and tension.

Mary Vieira was a pioneer of Concrete Art in the style typical of her country. The ability to capture the viewer and a deep engagement with space and movement are characteristic of her work, which had a decisive influence on Brazilian modernism. Vieira came to Europe in 1952 and became a member of the Zurich artist group Allianz. Her few posters are notable for their sensitive balance of color and form. In the poster for the Brazilian airline Panair do Brasil, she avoided any reference to the nostalgic yearning for travel. Instead, her clear composition takes up the colors of the Brazilian flag—absent the signal color yellow—with the blue and green symbolizing the sky and land. The asymmetrically placed circle can be read as either a simplified sun symbol or a globe—or also, given the horizon line, as a highly abstracted airplane. The geometric elements enter into an exciting dialogue with the sharply set lowercase letters of the text. The wide spacing between the individual parts of the name accentuates the “airspace” between them. With this poster Vieira managed to create a universal advertising message that captures the era’s belief in progress. She had already designed a poster for the exhibition Brasilien baut (Brazil Builds) in 1954 that similarly combines playful elegance and austerity, building a bridge between Swiss and Brazilian modernism.
