Words in green and red seem to come from far away and rush toward the viewer. Their rendering in deep perspective gives them the urgency of a cry. In reverse perspective and in larger type, the word “Libres” in blue dominates the poster, dying away like an echo.

The Austrian graphic designer Herbert Bayer (1900–1985) managed with this typographic work to arrestingly capture the emotional tensions of the times. The high-impact words are interspersed with billowing plumes of blue that recall flames as much as they do smoke or clouds. After training and doing an apprenticeship at the Bauhaus, Bayer worked for the Nazi regime until 1938. After some of his works were nonetheless presented in the Degenerate Art exhibition in Munich, Bayer decided to emigrate to the United States. There the politician Nelson Rockefeller (1908–1979), director of the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs, commissioned in 1942 four of the most progressive designers of the day to produce propaganda posters. Along with Bayer, they were Aleksej Česlavovič Brodovič (1898–1971), Edward McKnight Kauffer (1891–1954), and John Atherton (1900–1952). Their brief was to depict in their posters the four freedoms President Franklin D. Roosevelt had articulated in his State of the Union address before Congress on January 6, 1941: freedom of religion and speech and freedom from fear and poverty. The goal was to gain Central America’s support against the Axis powers and to strengthen the anti-Hitler coalition. All posters in the series are distinguished by great artistic liberties. Brodovič, McKnight Kauffer, and Atherton each illustrated one of the four freedoms symbolically in their image. Bayer by contrast, with his bold text-only poster, conveyed the conviction that the freedoms could only be understood as a unit, and must be demanded and defended as such. (Bettina Richter)
