Stefan Sagmeister’s (b. 1962) posters rebel against all the rules of classic poster design. Toying with irony and visual quotes are just as much a part of his creative repertoire as is radical subjectivity. In the poster for his first solo exhibition, also shown at the Museum für Gestaltung, he even made himself the subject.

As a parody of himself, with a glued-on mustache as flimsy disguise, Stefan Sagmeister the Austrian designer earnestly meets the viewer’s gaze. While in one of his most famous posters, from 1999, he scratched the words directly into his naked body to illustrate the pain of the design process, here the informative text is added as a separate block. But the suits of the two men posing decorously before flowered wallpaper carry additional, more subjective, messages. The visual quotes from the designer’s own work accompanied by text in his handwriting proliferating across the garments allude to the contents of the monographic show. His name written in french fries across the top of the poster likewise stands for Sagmeister’s consistent championing of individuality in graphic design. The conventional rules governing the poster medium, such as formal reduction, long-distance impact, and the unconditional foregrounding of informational content, are of little interest to him. Sagmeister is instead always on the lookout for original solutions, which are often provocative and invariably vexing. This is attributable in part to his ironic self-exposure, although this is never a case of mere vain grandstanding. Sagmeister’s answer to the perfection of computer design consists of works that emphasize tactile qualities and the experimental handmade aesthetic, thus advocating a creative personal approach to the design process. The success of this attitude is demonstrated by commissions for music legends such as the Rolling Stones, David Byrne, and Lou Reed. (Bettina Richter)
