Like other Russian avant-garde artists, Gustav Klucis (1895–1938) devoted most of his work to the propaganda poster: the aim was to mobilize the masses for a political and economic awakening. The radical restructuring of society in the nascent Soviet Union was expressed in a brand new graphic language that would decisively influence the modernist aesthetic.

To mark the thirteenth anniversary of the October Revolution, in 1930 Gustav Klucis crafted a suggestive poster in which he masterfully applied the new stylistic means of modernist graphic design—photomontage and the use of sans-serif type as a design element. The poster was modeled on a photographic self-portrait showing Klucis with outstretched arm and open palm. All that remained from this original draft was the oversized hand, set diagonally in the picture space. This motif is then repeated in a pyramidal arrangement starting from the lower right corner. In the foreground, the hands are each linked to an individual face belonging to a female farmer or male worker. In the background, the faces then get lost in the crowd. Through repetition, the outstretched open hand becomes a symbol of cooperation, solidarity, and consent to the plan to accomplish together the great work to be done. With his “hand portrait,” Klucis included himself in the collective and thus conveyed his self-image as an artist in the service of sociopolitical change. The ominous appropriation of this gesture in Hitler’s fascism would transform the greeting into its opposite only a few years later. The lettering, which is likewise set diagonally, crisscrossing the diagonal of the hand, is characteristic for the dynamic use of typography in Russian Constructivism: the text becomes a visual call to action.
