The classical form of the violin has remained virtually unchanged since the sixteenth century. The variations presented here are therefore the exception and reveal the focus on formal opulence in the Hug Collection/Zurich, which was donated to the Museum für Gestaltung in the 1960s. The kit violin, or dancing master's kit (pochette in French), is a seventeenth-century violin with a very slim body for easy stowing in the elongated trouser pockets of a dance teacher, who could then also demonstrate dance steps.
