Wolfgang Weingart (b. 1941) launched his artistic research into the letter M in 1962, in parallel with his typesetting training in Stuttgart. He then revisited the topic in a class taught by Emil Ruder in Basel, creating new M forms using photo-optical methods for his year-end assignment, which he published in book form in 1966. From these versions of the letter M, which he used as typesetting material, he then created M letter compositions, which he published from 1967 to 1971.
