The early work of textile designer Karin Wälchli (b. 1960), who studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich, already bears the hallmarks of the label Chalet5, which she cofounded with Guido Reichlin in 1998. The tension-filled play of densely repeating geometric shapes in daring color combinations flouts the classical hierarchy of pattern and ground. All works are self-produced by hand in small series.
