Anonymous folk pottery stands next to an artist’s design. With a lavish gesture, a dog looking back over its shoulder is reproduced on the robust Spanish faience, supplemented by almost calligraphic brushstrokes. Islamic ceramics used looping calligraphy in combination with meandering grooves as regular ornamental patterns, while the dynamic surface of the decorative plate by Art Nouveau designer Hans Stoltenberg Lerche (1865–1920) invites us to look below the surface of the water, where crabs are lurking amid coral branches.
