His lifelong teaching activities at home and abroad made the typographic designer Hans-Rudolf Lutz (1939–1998) financially independent and allowed him to pursue his own projects. In 1986, he self-published his first two picture books—Menschen (People) and Gesichter (Faces)—each consisting of fifty loose screen-printed sheets. The figures and faces remain recognizable despite the repro-technical distortion and fascinate with their archaic visual force.
