Josef Müller-Brockmann’s passion for music and acting developed early on, and music became a fixed part of his life when he married violinist Verena Brockmann in 1943. From 1950 until the 1970s, he designed posters and program booklets for Tonhalle concert hall, Stadttheater, and Opernhaus Zürich. At first illustrative and geometric compositions alternated, but the constructive approach ultimately prevailed, whereby the program gave the designer more room than the poster for photographic experiments.
