With the transition to self-service stores, product packaging suddenly became more relevant. Its surfaces could now communicate directly with the consumer, often with a graphical, striking brand logo or product name. Folding boxes, round cardboard or metal cans, and tubes leave little room for creative design strategies. Product packages circa 1940 served primarily as container and vehicle for conveying the brand and product name.
